Student Life Master Plan - University of Montana
SMA Architecture + Design worked the State of Montana and the University of Montana in the development of a long-term Student Life Master Plan which also included a Wayfinding & Branding Study. All campus buildings were evaluated for the condition of their building systems, finish condition, and utilization. We also sought insight from the student population using a social mapping tool and major stakeholders such as faculty and the student government.
Utilizing the information gained in the master planning discussions, we included possible solutions that addressed the primary needs of the University to maintain an innovative and student-centric campus. A lack of clear signage, cohesive branding, and sensical building layout contributed to some of the confusion for new students and visitors coming to campus. Long-term solutions in the Master Plan include new construction to address dining and residence life needs, remodeling and a logical and cohesive wayfinding approach.
The Master Plan recommends improvements and buildings added along Ryman Walk, Arthur Avenue aesthetics, connectivity to the river and M trails with the overall vision in improving student recruitment, retention and overall experience while attending UM.
