New Residence Hall - Montana State University

bozeman, montana

SMA Architects is extremely proud to have teamed with Montana State University, Jackson Contractor Group and partner firm NAC Architecture on the design for MSU's New Residence Hall, planned to open Fall 2020. The incredible team partnership and collaboration drove the success of the project, which was designed utilizing the knowledge and success gained from Yellowstone Hall, completed in 2016. The New Residence Hall is being constructed on the north side of MSU's campus at 11th and College Avenue opening up to Wally Byam park.

The program developed for the New Residence Hall has similar room types as the resident rooms in the recently completed Yellowstone Hall. Rooms are conīŦgured in 10 communities with 51 beds in each community. Comprised of single rooms, double rooms and triple rooms, the 150,000 sf residence hall focuses on creating collision spaces to facilitate student interaction within and between communities. Utilizing two story active lounges, a variety of study rooms, a central lobby, kitchen and lounge spaces many opportunities are created for students to connect academically and through shared interests and hobbies.

With an additional focus on minimizing the building's footprint, the building design is oriented to optimize solar access in the colder months while reducing heat gain in the warmer months. The site creates outdoor space and activity areas for students and is oriented towards a pedestrian way to connect with the new dining hall and academic areas of the campus. The building is targeting LEED Silver Certification.
