Butte School District K-8 Pre-Bond Planning
SMA Architects is working with the Butte School District in the pre-bond planning for all of their K-8 facilities including East Middle School, Butte's only public middle school, and all six of their Elementary Schools.
The planning consisted of building evaluations, condition reports, and programming and utilization studies. Our evaluations identified a need to make safety and security upgrades to all facilities, and to renovate, upgrade and add an addition to East Middle School. East Middle School opened its doors in 1957 and has not undergone any major, widespread upgrades since. Proposed changes include adding a new gym and five new Science classroom / lab combinations. Renovations include Art rooms, Health rooms, Weightlifting, Locker Rooms, Family & Consumer Science, Shared Spaces, Life Skills, and Restrooms. Building upgrades will include new ceilings, lights, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, asbestos abatement, add a fire suppression system, and make structural and ADA compliant upgrades.
In addition to building upgrades at East Middle School, each of the six Elementary Schools were studied and documented for the safety and security upgrades that would be necessary at each. Upgrades will include renovated reception and vestibules, creating one point-of-entry, notification systems, and access control.
SMA Architects assisted in the cost estimating to set the bond amount, provided bond campaign support, and design and renderings to illustrate the proposed changes.
