helena, montana

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana and Health Care Services Corporation engaged SMA Architects to design a new, state-of-the-art facility to combine their Helena workforce under one roof.  The 93,000 square foot facility consist of open office working environments, corporate offices, collaborative work areas, workout facilities and  gathering spaces including a Café and breakout amenities. SMA Architect’s building design was all encompassing and included design of core and shell, interiors, graphics and branding and furniture selection.

During the visioning process, SMA and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana identified five power words that provided the basis of the building design:  Wellness, Flexibility, Value + Performance, Authenticity, Communication + Fun.  The building connects to the exterior environment through views, daylighting and fresh air, along with the workout room, which contributes to occupant wellness.  The open office work space, collaborative areas and integration of technology allow flexibility of the work environment as Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s needs evolve in the future.  High-performance design strategies and building systems were integrated into the design from its conception and contributed to the building achieving LEED silver certification.  The selection of materials and colors as well as the building’s connection to the natural setting contribute the a sense of authenticity and place.  The design’s inclusion of interactive and collaborative spaces throughout the building encourage communication among the building occupants and create an active and fun working environment.

SMA also worked closely with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana to develop branding and graphics that are integrated into the building’s interior.  Intended  to promote BCBS Montana’s identity, the package includes a historical timeline, Governor’s Cup wall, People and Places of Montana, and branding for the fitness area and Café 406
