With the current expansion and growth in Helena, the YMCA is feeling the pressure as their outdated facility grows in membership. Many activities and special events are held at locations away from the building and space within the facility is shrinking fast and cannot accommodate new programs. The Helena Family YMCA has asked SMA to design their new vision of expansion and renovation to their existing facility. These initial concepts will help the YMCA with fund-raising efforts within the community. New features will include a larger day care area, increased fitness and cardio suites, an additional pool, and a multipurpose room for meetings , sign-ups and special events. With this new expansion, the YMCA expects growth not only in the quantity of its membership, but in the quality of its facilities and services.
Green building concepts: Rooftop ventilation and daylight monitors to reduce load on electrical lighting system and mechanical ventilation system. High performance glazing systems using natural ventilation and consideration of natural light deeper into occupied spaces coupled with exterior shading/heat gain management devices. Water fixtures and lighting systems would use occupancy/proximity sensors. The indoor air quality would also be improved by using low VOC paints and adhesives during construction. The program itself promotes better walkability and biking to the facility. There is a great potential for implementing a green roof concept which is being considered.
